Louis Wain was an artist who painted the most splendid cats. Many of them are endowed with human qualities, they wear clothes and do human activities yet they maintain a strong quality of feline in their expressions. He was a very popular artist in his day, and was president of the National Cat Club. He was active in various cat related charities.

Louis Wain had a difficult life. Like many artists he was no businessman and was frequently underpaid for his work. Often he sold the rights to a painting outright instead of getting royalties on it. When he was twenty his father died and he was left as the sole support of his mother and sisters. He was always eccentric but in his fifties he started to show signs of schizophrenia and was hospitalized in a charity hospital.

He kept up his cat artwork and the people at the hospital realized he was Louis Wain the cat artist. A collection was taken up, and he spent his last years in a nicer hospital which had a garden and cats.

As an artist I've noticed that the things that get the most attention are often the last to sell. Sometimes it's obvious why when they are the most oddball flashy things but sometimes they are the most "normal" and the most sellable. That was true when I did craft fairs and now that I've been pretty much exclusively online it's still true. I'll put something up on flickr and etsy and a million people look at it and exclaim about it, and then it just sits in the store while things I didn't think would sell fly off the digital shelves.

I was reminded of this when I saw a post on the Etsy LiveJournal group about a really cool notebook that garnered the most attention but was the only one that didn't sell. I love it! It's made from a damaged children's book from the 1960s and all the little leaves have written on them various products that are made out of trees.

A change of direction

I did this blog for a while and then abandoned it to work on my other blogs. Now I'm going to change things around a bit and actually feature artists, usually with links to their online stores.

I'm excited about the new change. I think I am going to start by writing a feature on myself, part for practice and part in hopes that it helps get my art out there.

I walk down College Street a lot and I always enjoy this painting. It's outside a bar.

I like that in the photo the man on the street is a similar size to the painted figures.

This part of College Street is an Italian neighborhood that has a lot of new and trendy bars.

I love the colors and light in this. Looking at it makes me want to climb to the top of that hill. I also like the way the trees are drawn. It's almost an animation style, at least it reminds me of those old cartoons that have great backgrounds.

I especially love the way the little pomegranate seed housings look with their little empty spots for the seeds to go in. I'm very partial to pomegranates in any case, to look at or eat.

This is an oil painting that looks a lot like acrylic. I wonder why the artist uses oil. Looking at this makes me think about painting my walls purple and the ceiling lavender. This is pretty much what I envisioned my ideal studio to be like when I was growing up.

An amazing portrait. It reminds me of a book I had when I was little of these colonial American portraits painted by traveling portrait painters. It was a book I really liked, I enjoyed going through it and taking a long time to look at all the pictures and the things that were put in the background.

This artist has a lot more work that I am enjoying looking at, in diferent styles. He has a great art blog, very thoughtful and captivating images.

The is one of those paintings I could look at for a long time. It's interesting to see the diferent way each animal is holding it's instrument. The way the light falls gives it kind of a 3d effect. The medium is gouche, kind of an opaque watercolor. I've always had problems trying to paint with it, so I really admire anyone who call produce that effect.
